Alireza Amirhajebi

Composer, Art Critic, Translator · Iran

Alireza Amirhajebi (b. 1970, Tehran) is a composer and thinker. He studied modern music, including audio, sound design, and audiosphere, at IRCAM in Paris. From 1995 to 1999, he collaborated on a joint project between IRCAM and the City of Paris to control noise pollution, including a specific project in 1997. His later collaborations include working with American composer Joshua Fineberg and Stephen McAdams in workshops at IRCAM and the Institut de Psychologie (Université René Descartes, Paris 5) in 1997. He also performed a solo sound performance as part of the FAO/UNICEF project for Somali children in Paris in 1998. His artistic practice includes numerous video art and sound/environmental installations and performances in prominent art galleries, art spaces, and museums in Tehran, spanning nearly two decades (1998-2017). He has also translated several books on conceptual art, theater, and performance art. According to IBNA and many critics, Amirhajebi is one of the few conceptual art and performance art practitioners who delivers original performances grounded in the ontological philosophy of these art forms. Some of his translations include "Indeterminacy" by John Cage, "Confronting Silence" by Tōru Takemitsu, as well as "Theater and Performance Art" and "Endless Beginning: Conceptual Art," the latter featuring articles by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Hans Richter, John Cage, Sol LeWitt, and Antonin Artaud, along with conversations with Marina Abramović and Allan Kaprow and a note from Robert Smithson.
