Nicolas Wiese

Audiovisual Artist, Designer, Composer-Performer · Berlin, Germany

Nicolas Wiese (*1976) is an audiovisual artist, designer and composer/performer of electroacoustic music based in Berlin, where he has lived and worked since 2006. He studied communication design, illustration and communication theory at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg (diploma 2005), and also attended Sound Studies at the UdK Berlin and courses in philosophy and sociology at the University of Hamburg.

His practice spans installation, spatial performance, contemporary electronic composition, relational and improvised music, graphic art, drawing, collage, radio and experimental film. His work deconstructs and reconstructs found images, found sound and quotations from mass media and everyday life; speech, the written word, architecture, complex abstraction and the refraction of nostalgia all play important roles. In his electroacoustic works he collages, layers and processes short fragments of acoustic recordings, in the tradition of musique concrète, adding sample-triggered polyphonic feedback modulation and close attention to a highly spatial listening experience.

He has performed, exhibited and released work across Europe, North America, Iran, Israel and Turkey. His collaborations include the duos The Pond (with singer Elisabetta Lanfredini) and The Quiet Cue (with guitarist Michael Renkel), the cross-media music theatre collective FrauVonDa, and his duo with Heidrun Schramm, established in 2004.
