An Moku

Sound Artist, Composer, Sound Designer · Zurich, Switzerland

An Moku is the project of Zurich-based sound artist and bass guitarist Dominik Grenzler (b. 1977, Gdynia, Poland). The name comes from the Japanese word 'anmoku', meaning tacit or unspoken: something that cannot be put into words but is understood all the same. Before An Moku he played bass in bands in Germany's Ruhr district and, from 1998 to 2001, toured as a hired bassist with singer-songwriter Daniel Denecke, including support slots for Whitney Houston, Joe Cocker and Marla Glen. He began the first recordings for An Moku in 2008. His work explores ambient, drone and experimental electronic music through reduction, repetition and layered organic textures, alongside practice in sound design, plugin development and experimental photography. Since 2015 he has run the micro label EndTitles.

Notable projects include How to Catch STILLE? (2013), a collaborative sound work involving more than 30 musicians and Sonos Switzerland; Where We Meet (2020) with Stijn Hüwels; and Raum (2021) with Stefan Schmidt, released on Karlrecords. His work has appeared on labels including Karlrecords, Slowcraft Records, Audiobulb, Puremagnetik, EndTitles and Bullflat3.8.
