Confronting Noises #3: Encountering Closed Doors

The third edition of our performance series focuses on resilience and entry: moving through barriers, opening spaces for risk and listening, with international and Berlin-based artists, and one performance streamed live from Toronto.

The two September editions fell either side of the third anniversary of the Woman, Life, Freedom (Zan, Zendegi, Azadi) movement. Their subtitles became metaphors: closed doors for cancellations, obstacles and limitations; open doors for moments of unity, trust and solidarity.

The evening opened with a duo improvisation by Gustavo Obligado and Eli Piña, close to the improvised music of Berlin's Echtzeitmusik scene. Matto Zoppi and Yeonjoon Yoon followed with a dialogue of voice, piano and electronics, with feedback running through the piano.

Deniz Tafaghodi played live from Toronto with Frank of Orange 'Ear on stage at PAS: she appeared in real time on an LED display beside him, piano and handmade electronics meeting across continents. The video of this performance is online, and two recordings of the session are on SoundCloud.

DIMA played a live audiovisual set, and Tika T closed the night with a set on vinyl, accompanied by bird's-eye-view footage filmed in the mountains of southern Germany and Switzerland.
