Frank

No-Input Mixer, Resonator Guitar, Samples

Frank creates a soundscape in the transition from noise to music. His improvised sets carry hints of melody, sporadic rhythms and sound structures formed from a wide archive of analogue sound samples, built up together with his wife Jo (glasambel), and woven into the digital signals of a no-input mixer and various electronic devices. He also plays a resonator guitar modified by Michael Danner: driven by a motor, a coil and a closed circuit, its strings vibrate continuously in an endless sustain, which radically changes both the sound and the way the instrument is played.

Sessions and duo and trio concerts with many musicians, among them Dizzy Moon, Ida Schuften Juhl, Mizuki Ishikawa, JD Zazie, Zayse, Zustand D., Cate Hops, Unmn, Deniz Tafaghodi, Rieko Okuda, Aljosha, Baphomet Vernacular and Ani Samperi, have brought DIY instruments, experimental arrangements, sound art and noise into his music.

With Jo he runs Orange 'Ear, a concert series in their shop and living space in Berlin-Friedrichshain, where musicians who make a strong impression on them perform in an intimate living-room setting before an attentive audience. Orange 'Ear is also known across Berlin's venues for documenting performances, and Frank's expertise in online streaming and staging made possible the Toronto–Berlin performance with Deniz Tafaghodi at Confronting Noises #3.
