JD Zazie
DJ, Avant-Turntablist, Sound Artist
JD Zazie is an Italian DJ, avant-turntablist, sound artist and curator based in Berlin. Coming from DJing and radio, she has explored over the years different ways of manipulating fixed, recorded sound sources in real time. Her live and recorded work sets out to redefine DJ and electroacoustic practice. Solo, in small groups or in large ensembles, she moves in an area that keeps stretching the borders of DJ mixing, free improvisation and composed music.
She treats CDJs, turntables and mixer as musical instruments, using them to mix and shape the sound sources she plays: mostly electronic and electroacoustic music, musique concrète, field recordings and improvised music. These range from existing releases and sound effects to her own recordings, taken from live sets and field recordings, and selected pre-mixed material. Juxtaposition, decontextualisation, fragmentation, repetition, sonic texture, scratch and error make up the grammar with which she relates, organises and rearranges the material.
